Denver Superintendent: Why We Sued the Federal Government

Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero is no stranger to challenging times: He took charge of Denver Public Schools in the spring of 2021 during the pandemic. But when his district became the first in the nation to sue the Trump administration over its directive allowing ICE enforcement actions in formerly protected settings (including schools), the stance put Dr. Marrero directly at odds with many individuals in power. In his new op-ed for Education Week, Dr. Marrero describes this important showdown over public education. “In today’s polarized climate, education policy is becoming increasingly divisive, and political battles seem to be never ending. Superintendents have no choice but to embrace their roles as civic leaders,” he writes.
