The K-12 Education Landscape in 2025: A Momentous Year Ahead
As we turn the calendar to what promises to be a transformative year for K-12 education, we’re looking beyond the buzzwords to where the real momentum lies. Through insights gathered from school district leaders, edtech companies, nonprofits, and government agencies, here’s a snapshot of the key areas that demand attention in 2025.
Concerns
Chronic absenteeism remains a significant challenge since the pandemic. Attendance impacts student outcomes like academic achievement, social-emotional health, and graduation rates. Even business publications like Forbes have weighed in on this critical issue.
Updated attendance data from the Nation’s Report Card/National Assessment of Educational Progress is expected in early 2025, providing insights into this ongoing concern. Additionally, potential immigration policy changes could influence attendance trends. Schools are preparing teachers and parents for possible scenarios, including encounters with ICE agents, as detailed in a New York Times article featuring Dr. Adam Clark of the Mount Diablo Unified School District in California.
State restrictions on classroom instruction, particularly on race, gender, and politically sensitive topics, are making headlines. February’s forthcoming State of the American Teacher Survey will shed light on the impact of these policies, which likely contribute to teacher turnover and shortages, especially in special education. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will issue a report on special education shortages later this year.
Generative AI is everywhere these days—and one of our top concerns is its misuse to create deepfakes of students or staff. Often sexually explicit or factually misleading, these deepfakes are designed to harass and bully, as highlighted in an EducationWeek article.
Unfortunately, few educators have received training on non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), according to research from the Center for Democracy and Technology. We anticipate a rapid increase in training efforts as awareness grows and more resources become available.
Trending Topics
Legal challenges to the Title IX amendments, set to redefine sex discrimination, continue across 26 states. Additionally, school choice expansion toward private institutions remains a legislative priority.
Debates over literacy and the science of reading, including phonics education and sight word memorization, are heating up. As parents of young readers, our team finds this topic especially resonant.
Cellphone bans on campuses are another hot topic. States are stepping in to address issues like bullying and violence, as highlighted by The New York Times.
Cyberattacks on schools are increasing, making cybersecurity and data privacy top priorities for district leaders. According to CoSN’s 2024 State of EdTech District Leadership Report, nearly all districts (99%) are taking steps to improve security.
With heightened scrutiny and mounting challenges, superintendent tenure is shrinking. Our Build Momentum for Education podcast’s fifth season delves into this issue, featuring insightful leaders like Dr. Rainey Briggs and Dr. Susan Enfield. Opportunities
Despite challenges, 2025 offers exciting opportunities. Workforce development initiatives are thriving, with rural communities leading collaborative efforts. Community colleges in 14 states recently received $65 million in U.S. Department of Labor grants to scale high-quality workforce training.
Critical thinking curricula and media literacy initiatives are gaining traction. The Social Institute’s #WinAtSocial, a gamified peer-to-peer learning platform, exemplifies this trend.
Generative AI shows promise in enhancing classroom instruction, streamlining admin tasks, and improving school operations. Tools like ThoughtExchange and Jotforms are gaining momentum for community feedback, multilingual communication, and family engagement.
AI is also revolutionizing tutoring, as highlighted by the National Student Support Accelerator, and aiding educators in budgeting, data analysis, and transportation planning.
